This afternoon, the Chicago Cubs are looking to tie their season-high four-game winning streak. Unfortunately, they’ll have to do it without a number of key players in the lineup (Willson Contreras, Nico Hoerner, Seiya Suzuki, Yan Gomes … even Clint Frazier). So it may be a bit of an uphill battle, especially against a starter like Miles Mikolas.
Mikolas, 33, has been very good through 10 starts this season (2.67 ERA) getting by primarily on great command (4.9% walk rate) and good contact management (4.9% barrel rate). The good news is that lefties have always hit Mikolas a LOT better than righties. The bad news is that he’ll have to face only four of them today, and one of them is Jason Heyward. So. Well.
But, hey, the Cubs have a fine pitcher on the mound, themselves, this afternoon. Marcus Stroman is making his 9th start as a Cub, coming off a particularly strong outing against the White Sox: 7.0 IP, 3H, 0ER, 2BB, 2Ks. In fact, he’s been on quite a run since getting blown up by the Rays:
Marcus Stroman is averaging 6.0 IP over his last five starts (30.0 IP total) with a 1.80 ER and a 4.4 BB%.
