Any roster moves we were expecting today appear to have been scuttled, temporarily, for health reasons.
Although David Bote’s 20-day rehab assignment was up, and thus he had to be activated or optioned or DFA’d, there is an exception if you have a new injury or it isn’t getting better. Unfortunately, that looks to be the case for Bote:
David Bote has been pulled from his rehab assignment. He has been experiencing bouts of dizziness and is getting checked out. #Cubs

Hopefully it isn’t something serious, and maybe it’s an infection or something that Bote needs a little time to rest from. I just hate the idea that he’s rehabbing this long from shoulder surgery, on the doorstep of finally returning, only to be set right back down by some other ailment.
Meanwhile, David Ross had said Jonathan Villar WOULD be returning tonight, but I read this update as including him in the group of players who aren’t quite ready:
#Cubs injury updates:
-Seiya Suzuki, Yan Gomes & Jonathan Villar took BP today. All progressing.
-David Bote was pulled from rehab assignment with dizziness. Will be evaluated.
-Sean Newcomb will throw again in a rehab game Wednesday.— Taylor McGregor (@Taylor_McGregor) June 7, 2022
What happened between Sunday night and today that Villar became not-quite-ready to return? Or are the Cubs just buying time for some other reason? Or are we going to get some last-minute roster moves announced just before the game? I wouldn’t rule that last one out, since sometimes these guys who are on the fence get in their pre-game work, and a decision is made thereafter.
Also, good to see Suzuki and Gomes taking BP. Suzuki should hopefully be back any day now, and Gomes could be getting close-ish to a rehab assignment if he’s taking batting practice.
