The Cubs are back at it in Baltimore tonight, only this time they’re actually behind the Orioles in the standings.
Marcus Stroman is on the mound for the Cubs, following a horrendous outing against the Cardinals (9ER over 4.0 IP). Stroman did strike out seven Cardinals in that one, but that seems to be his problem this year … he’s suddenly striking guys out, but the contact is harder *and* more elevated than ever.
As a Cub, Stroman is posting career highs in ERA, average exit velocity, launch angle, barrel%, and hardhit%. Naturally, his groundball rate is at a career low, while both his line drive rate and fly ball rate are at career highs. Batters are also sending the ball right back up the middle more than ever before, and all of this is happening despite a .286 BABIP, well below his career mark (.304 BABIP).
Stroman has had a handful of really strong outings this season, but he’s been blown up three times (Rockies, Rays, Cardinals) and it’s making all the difference: 21 earned runs in 12.1 IP.
Stroman will face the same lineup that hit five homers and scored 9 runs against the Cubs last night.
