Benches Clear Twice As the South Bend Cubs Win Late

Chicago Cubs

The South Bend Cubs are playing on Marquee tonight, what with the big league team off, and it’s looking like they’re putting on a show for the TV crowd.

No, it’s not a high-scoring affair or a blowout for the Cubs (though they did just lock down the win. Instead, it’s been a pitcher’s duel, with the Cubs scoring late to go on top … and then drama followed:

Apparently there was some chippiness about the way the Cubs scored? Or the way they were celebrating after the score? Or the way Yohendrick Pinango accidentally bumped into the pitcher? Weird.

In any case, there was as force out grounder two batters later, and Caleb Knight went – admittedly – extra hard into second base. And then the benches emptied again, gathering around second base:

More jawing. More escalation. But not physical. Just guys standing up for their teammates, and not wanting to take any crap. I get it.

Overall on the night, the South Bend Cubs won the game 2-0, with Joe Nahas (6.0 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 K) and Jeremiah Estrada (3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 6 K) combining for the shutout. As you could see there, it was Owen Caissie with the game-winning hit, one of two hits (and a walk) for him on the night.
