Cubs Righty Marcus Stroman to the 15-Day Injured List
There were a flurry of roster moves this afternoon, all of which you can read about right here. In short, Wade Miley, Jonathan Villar, Yan Gomes, and Chris Martin are returning to the Cubs. And to make room for them all on the active roster, the Cubs are DFA-ing Clint Frazier (yes, really), sending Alfonso Rivas and Michael Rucker to Iowa, and … wait, what’s that? Marcus Stroman is headed to the Injured List with right shoulder inflammation?
That came out of nowhere.
Chris Martin reinstated from restricted list. Stroman to 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation. Wade Miley, Yan Gomes, Jonathan Villar reinstated from IL. Rivas and Rucker to Iowa. Clint Frazier DFA'd

Stroman, 31, has already missed some time this season due to COVID, but now he’s heading to the IL with right shoulder inflammation. That is an extreme bummer, though it may help explain the 9 earned runs over 4.0 innings in St. Louis his last time out.
Without more context, it’s difficult to fully understand the implications here. Hopefully, we get more quotes and background soon.
In the meantime, the Cubs rotation still has five members – Kyle Hendricks, Wade Miley, Justin Steele, Matt Swarmer, and Keegan Thompson. So I guess that answers the question of whether or not the Cubs are going to move to a six-man in the short-term.
Stroman signed a three-year, $71M deal with the Cubs before the season and currently has a 5.32 ERA through 9 starts. But as we’ve discussed, three of those starts account for 21 of his 28 earned runs, with just 7 ER through his other six outings combined.
