The Cubs are in New York! And Wade Miley is back on the mound after a brief stint on the injured list (shoulder strain).
You may have noticed the lack of a ramp-up period or rehab stint for Miley, who also began the year on the IL with elbow inflammation. And that’s likely because the Cubs truly wanted to get him back out there as soon as possible. Miley can ultimately be one of the Cubs best trade chips at the deadline, and getting him right as soon as possible – and giving him as many starts before the deadline as possible – is a priority. And that’s especially clear given that the Cubs could’ve gone with almost any starter after so many days off in a row.
So far, Miley has made three starts for the Cubs. His first was very short, as he was still ramping up, but after that he delivered seven scoreless innings against the Pirates and a quality start against the D-Backs. Generally speaking, he’s looked good, but he’s got a tough test ahead of him in New York tonight.
And so do the Cubs.
Luis Severino has made 10 really strong starts this season (2.95 ERA), including most recently a 10K, 1BB, 7.0 IP shutout of the Tigers. He’s gone at least six innings in four straight outings, and is especially tough on righties. The Cubs are going to need some luck tonight.
