The Cubs rotation went from overflowed to understaffed in 24 hours. At the moment, the only healthy starters are Justin Steele, Keegan Thompson, and tonight’s righty, Matt Swarmer.
Swarmer, of course, has been a pleasant surprise of late, making two excellent starts against the Brewers and Cardinals (combined): 12.0 IP, 7H, 2ER, 3BB, 11Ks. He uses – basically – only two pitches, a four-seamer and a slider, though he’ll mix in the very occasional changeup (3.5%), as well. Typically, relying on just two pitches isn’t enough to get through lineups 2-3 times in a single outing, but he’s made it work so far – in part because of the effective tunneling of both pitches and the multiple shapes of his slider.
With all that said, tonight’s matchup with the Yankees (119 wRC+ vs. RHP, top in MLB) is going to be much tougher than his starts against the Brewers (102 wRC+) and Cardinals (101 wRC+). So if he can deliver something useful? Boy. That would be very impressive. And a really interesting development.
Starting opposite Swarmer is Yankees lefty Jordan Montgomery, who’s had an impressive three-game stretch:
vs. DET: 6.1 IP, 5H, 2ER, 1BB, 5Ks
vs. LAA: 7.0 IP, 4H, 1ER, 1BB, 4Ks
vs. BAL : 6.0 IP, 4H, 2ER, 0BB, 5Ks
Combined: 19.1 IP, 13H, 5ER, 2BB, 14Ks … that’s some consistent sh*t right there.
Go Cubs.
