I understand that there are some humorous layers to this story, and I’ll not chide anyone for chuckling. I did.
But dang if I don’t also feel bad.
So, if you’ll recall, the Los Angeles Angels were recently mired in what would ultimately become a whopping 14-game losing streak. Late in that streak, manager Joe Maddon was fired. It was unfortunate, but, since he was a lame duck in any case, managing a roster of stars that REALLY needed to turn things around, it was understandable.
But here’s the sad part: after the 12th loss, Maddon shaved his head into a mohawk so he could show the players and try to lighten their spirits. But they never got to see, because he was fired that very day:
Within the context of understanding that Maddon will be fine – he’s already thinking about his next managerial job – I can’t shake the sad image of him walking into the ballpark, ready to show off the new ‘do, and then being fired. While he stands there with a dang mohawk.
Like I said, it’s also kinda funny.
