On the first play of tonight’s game at Wrigley Field, Jurickson Profar hit a grounder to first baseman Frank Schwindel. But because starter Justin Steele didn’t turn to cover the bag quickly enough, a foot race broke out between the Cubs big first baseman and the Padres leadoff hitter.
And somehow, Schwindel won the battle.
Kudos to Schwindel for quickly recognizing that Steele wouldn’t get there in time and for the athleticism to actually make the play. His defense at first has not been particularly strong this season, but that was a great play.
