As announced, Caleb Kilian is coming back up tonight to start for the Chicago Cubs against the San Diego Padres.
To make room for Kilian on the active roster, Nick Madrigal was placed on the 10-day IL with a left groin strain, backdated to June 12. Madrigal left the marathon game this weekend early, and hasn’t played since. It seems like the Cubs may have known he was gonna hit the IL for a couple days, but also knew they were going to need a roster spot for Kilian anyway, so the moves get paired together.
What happens after Kilian’s start remains to be seen. The rotation is in such a state that it’s not like it would be silly to keep him up and going every five days, but if the Cubs do that, will they send out a reliever tomorrow in order to call up a different position player?
As for Madrigal, we’ll see how long he’s out, and whether this winds up a way to get him an ACTUALLY-APPROPRIATELY-LENGTHED rehab assignment at Iowa to try to finally get on track.
