San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado is in the midst of an MVP-caliber season, hitting .329/.401/.548/164 wRC+, while playing great defense, and ALREADY worth 4.2 WAR. He’s been on another planet.
Unfortunately, he just suffered a really bad-looking injury at first base and had to be helped off the field:
Machado was in obvious pain after slipping awkwardly off the back of the base while trying to beat the throw. His forefoot hit the dirt, rolled badly, and you just have to hope it isn’t as bad as it looked. That could be a terrible, terrible injury.
The Padres, 41-26, are already playing without Fernando Tatis Jr., and yet are just a half-game out in the competitive NL West. Still, losing Manny Machado for a considerable period of time would be a terrible blow for them, and obviously for him.
UPDATE: The good news is that there is no fracture, though with ankles, the damage that can be done to the ligaments and tendons is sometimes an even greater concern. If Machado avoided serious damage, he’ll be incredibly lucky, because that one looked so bad.
