Matt Swarmer might be a reliever long-term, but with three starting pitchers on the mend, he’s going to keep getting his shot out of the rotation. So far, he’s made four starts for the Cubs, the first two of which were excellent (12.0 IP, 7H, 2ER, 3BB, 11Ks), the second two of which were borderline disasters (8.2 IP, 11H, 10ER, 5BB, 4Ks).
He’s given up at least one homer in each start so far, and 10 total across four games. To be fair, Swarmer has faced only contenders so far (Padres, Yankees, Cardinals, Brewers), but you don’t get to pick your opponents. And he won’t get that excuse tonight against the Pirates.
Good luck.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are starting Roansy Contreras tonight.
The 22-year-old right-hander has appeared in eight games so far this season, 5 of which have been starts and all of which have been for multiple innings. And the early returns are pretty impressive: 3.06 ERA, 35Ks, 12 BBs. He does allow his fair share of hard contact in the air, however, which is why his 4.38 xERA is MUCH higher than his actual results.
Go Cubs.
