The Cubs have not gotten off to a good start in Pittsburgh this week, with the Pirates outscoring them 19-2 over their first two contests. Keegan Thompson is on the mound for the Cubs tonight, however, and he’s coming off a really strong start against the Braves. The best of his career, actually. Hopefully, he can repeat that performance at PNC with the following group behind him.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
- Rafael Ortega, CF
- Willson Contreras, DH
- Patrick Wisdom, 3B
- Ian Happ, LF
- Yan Gomes, C
- Jonathan Villar, 2B
- Nico Hoerner, SS
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Alfonso Rivas, 1B
SP: Keegan Thompson, RHP
Usually, the Cubs try to save the Gomes (catcher)/Contreras (DH) approach for games against left-handed pitching, but with an 11:35am CT start tomorrow following tonight’s game, they had to switch it up. Christopher Morel is the odd man out against the righty, Jerad Eickoff, with Jason Heyward in right field. (Note: a previous version of this post – and the lineup in the app for about 10 minutes – had Morel instead of Ortega in center field.)
Perhaps just a day of rest for Morel ahead of the early game tomorrow.
Alfonso Rivas is at first base, while Schwindel is still out. Ditto Jonathan Villar with Nick Madrigal on the shelf.
As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ post closer to game time
