Two of the best young players in baseball just collided as the Astros play the Mets. Jeremy Peña was headed out to catch a pop up, and Yordan Alvarez was coming in to catch the same. Just one of those terrible situations where neither could quite hear or see the other until it was too late.
Each of Peña and Alvarez were down for a while as trainers checked on them:
Ultimately, Peña was able to walk off under his own power, but Alvarez had to be carted off the field:
Hopefully both players will be OK after evaluations. You just hate to see two guys slam into each other like that at full speed.
Peña, 24, is currently hitting .275/.329/.465/129 wRC+ as a breakout shortstop for the Astros, and has already been worth 2.4 WAR. Alvarez, who just signed a huge extension, is hitting a ridiculous .321/.415/.667/205 wRC+. He is only 25.
