Chicago Cubs starter Alec Mills threw just 7 pitches tonight before he had to exit the game. On his final pitch, Rafael Devers rocketed a double to right, and Mills was immediately uncomfortable.
The trainer and David Ross came out to the mound, and after a very brief conversation – in which Mills, again, just looked very uncomfortable – Mills was pulled from the game in favor of Mark Leiter Jr.
We’ll update when more word is available. Of note, Mills has already missed most of this season with back and quad injuries. Also of note, Caleb Kilian is pitching for the Iowa Cubs tonight. Without another off-day before Mills would have to go again, it’s safe to assume the Cubs will have to start either Kilian or Leiter in five days. (Marcus Stroman pitches tomorrow at Iowa in his first rehab outing, but there’s just no way the Cubs would have him go two or three innings on Sunday and then pitch again on Thursday.)
