A Trio of Cubs Heading Out on Rehab Assignments: Madrigal, Schwindel, Norris

Chicago Cubs

A trio of injured Chicago Cubs players are heading out on rehab assignments this week.

Per Jordan Bastian:

Nick Madrigal (groin) will begin his rehab assignment at Triple-A Iowa on Thursday. As we’ve discussed, the issues with Madrigal this year seem to be more complex than a mere injury or two, and there seems to be a connection between his hamstring injury/surgery last year, his injuries this year, his swing mechanics, etc. There needs to be something like a total reset, and I hope that he gets plenty of time at Iowa to work through it. We need to see much, much better quality of contact before big league starts could be justified.

Frank Schwindel (back) is likely to start his own rehab assignment at Iowa on Friday. How the Cubs will sort out the playing time when he’s ready to go remains to be seen, but it’s most likely he’d just once again be a one-to-one swap out at first base with Alfonso Rivas.

Daniel Norris (finger) will head to Iowa tomorrow to start his rehab assignment. It could be a long one, as the Cubs figure out what they want to do with him going forward. The strikeouts have been outstanding, but the hard contact has been scary. It’s possible he’ll keep “rehabbing” at Iowa until the Cubs actually have to swap someone out of the bullpen for rest purposes.
