Drew Smyly is on the bump for the second-half of the Cubs-Mets double-header at Wrigley Field today, in what will be his second start since coming off the IL (just like Marcus Stroman in Game 1).
Smyly’s first start back was a short affair in Los Angeles, where the Dodgers touched him up for four earned runs in just 2.0 innings. Maybe he was just getting his feet back underneath him. At a minimum, he should be a little more stretched out this time around.
However, he’s got himself one heck of a matchup against Max Scherzer, who’s still doing Max Scherzer things here in 2022: 2.15 ERA over 10 starts. Scherzer’s latest outing was one of his best of the season, and it came against the Braves: 7.0 IP, 3H, 1ER, 0BB, 9Ks. He’s got a strikeout rate over 33% and a walk rate under 5%. It might not be pretty. Good luck, Cubs. You’re gonna need it.
