I would never do Christopher Morel the disservice of comparing him to Javy Báez. That’s just so unfair. Javy was singular in so many ways, and there was only one El Mago.
That said, Morel absolutely plays the game with a similar zest, and uses his superior athleticism to gain little edges here and there where he can.
And, like was so often the case with Báez, sometimes Morel is just in the right place at the right time to force a mistake by the other team. Tonight, after he hit a double and there was going to be a play at the plate, Morel was cheating way off second base so that he could take third on the throw home. Sensible move, if super aggressive. The problem for him was the throw getting cut off, and he was going to be dead to rights … except the throw somehow, magically, wound up in center field with no one within 50 feet of it.
So Morel could stroll on home:
Sometimes, if you’re just aggressive enough, good things can happen. It worked for Javy Báez so often. Maybe it’ll work for Morel, too.
