Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 15, Phillies 2 – July 22, 2022

Chicago Cubs

Clearly, the Cubs just needed a few days off to rest and regroup, and then they can begin their march toward the playoffs.

The Phillies made some mistakes in the 5th inning, the Cubs took advantage and the lead, and then they really pourrrred it on from there. Not quite a Red Sox-Blue Jays situation (look up that game if you don’t know what I mean), but it was quickly a blowout. Nice to do in the home park of a playoff contender.

Great games abounded. Willson Contreras homered and got on base four times. Christopher Morel had three hits. Ian Happ had four hits. Seiya Suzuki had four hits, including a homer, and a walk. Nelson Velazquez homer twice … and he didn’t come into the game until the 8th inning!

Justin Steele gave up a first-pitch dinger to Kyle Schwarber … and that was it. He wasn’t at his sharpest, mind you, but he did manage to grind his way through five innings. It was smooth sailing for the bullpen from there with the huge lead. Erich Uelmen made his big league debut, giving up a homer and a walk, but striking out Nick Castellanos to end the game.
