SWEEP. That sucks for the Phillies, who are trying to be competitive, but the Cubs came out of the break really clicking. All obligatory notes about how it doesn’t necessarily matter for this season’s ultimate end, but it was fun to see how good these Cubs CAN be.
If that was Drew Smyly’s last start with the Cubs, he sure went out on a high note, allowing just one earned run over his six innings of work. He won’t be viewed as an impact starter on the trade market, but a capable back-end guy with some upside? Yes. He is. And that should have meaningful value.
The Cubs went homer happy again today, with two from Yan Gomes and Nelson Velazquez hitting his third in the series. David Roberts did a little bit of tightroping in the 9th, but closed it out successfully. If he remains healthy for just a few more days …
