Tonight marks the first of the final two games for the Cubs at Wrigley Field before the trade deadline.
That means deep breaths and tears may be visible on camera. In all likelihood, this is the last time you’ll be able to see Willson Contreras in a Cubs uniform at Wrigley Field. Brace for emotions.
In the meantime, here’s what I wrote about tonight’s starter, Adrian Sampson, in the series preview:
Adrian Sampson is finally catching a break! Sampson, 30, has made seven appearances (5 starts) for the Cubs this year, and here’s who he faced, in order: Dodgers, Braves, Cardinals, Red Sox, Brewers, Orioles (when they were on an MLB leading winning streak), and the Mets. And despite that mountain of contenders/hot teams, Sampson escaped with a 3.34 ERA over 32.1 IP. Today, he’ll face the Pirates, who are one of the weakest teams vs. RHP in MLB.
J.T. Brubaker is having a fine season, nothing special, but he is coming off an excellent start against the Marlins: 7.0 IP, 3H, 0ER, 2BB, 9Ks. So he does have that in him. That said, the Cubs offense (105 wRC+, 14th) has been far better than the Marlins (68 wRC+, 30th in MLB) over the past 30 days.
Zoom in, and it’s even better.
