Well, the Cubs winning streak came to an end last night, so I guess that means they’ll be selling at the trade deadline now. Darn. So close.
After last night’s battle of the lefties, we’ve got a couple of righties on tap for you tonight. Marcus Stroman is picking up the ball for the Cubs following a really nice outing against the Phillies. He’s actually made three straight nice starts since returning from the IL, increasing the length of each outing along the way: 14.1 IP, 8H, 2ER, 5BB, 14Ks. And unlike the Giants outsized success against left-handed pitching, they’re just about league average against righties. The stage is set for another solid performance from Stroman tonight.
Meanwhile, Alex Cobb is taking the mound for San Francisco in what has been a really weird and unlucky season overall, featuring poor results (4.26 ERA) but truly stellar peripherals (2.88 xERA, 2.94 FIP). Under the hood, I can see that Cobb has been stingy with the free passes, has an absolutely insane -0.6 degree average launch angle, and has limited the hard contact quite well, but somehow has a 10.9% HR/FB ratio, and, again, an ERA over 4.00. It’s pretty wild.
Hopefully, those the positive regression doesn’t start tonight! Go Cubs.
