Another late night game in San Francisco tonight. They really should ban the West Coast. Just, like, in general. Or at least the time zones. I’m getting sick of it.
I can’t say I’m particularly familiar with tonight’s Giants starter, Jakob Junis, a 5th round pick back in 2011 who played with the Royals until this season. But he has gotten some really nice results this year over 8 starts and 54.1 total innings pitched: 2.98 ERA.
HOWEVA, the peripherals are not nearly as impressive (4.09 xERA). Junis doesn’t walk many batters (5.1%) but he’s not exactly a strikeout artist (20.5%) or contact manager (89.5 MPH, 11.3 launch angle, 41.8 hard%) either. In short, that .245 BABIP and 82.6% strand rate is one massive mirage. And lefties have hit him particularly well.
Drew Smyly is the scheduled starter for tonight, so apparently no trade has come together in time to skip this start.
