Given Ian Happ’s versatility in the outfield and switch-hitting, it’s hard to find a contender where he wouldn’t be a fit. So it’s not surprising, as he’s having his best season and comes with an extra year of control, that “everyone” wants him.
That includes the top team out west, according to Jon Heyman:
I can buy that. I know most things this time of year are about posturing and leverage, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t also sometimes true. The Dodgers should and would look at Ian Happ as a back-up plan for Juan Soto.
That said, I’m sure there’s also some additional layer here for why it’s coming out now. It could be that the Dodgers want the Nationals to know they have a back-up plan for Soto, and maybe they don’t want to keep waiting. It could be that the Cubs want the Padres to know that their biggest rival is also interested in Ian Happ.
What we know is that Ian Happ is a very attractive player to a large number of teams – we’ve heard about the Dodgers, Padres, Braves, Blue Jays, Phillies, Brewers, White Sox, and Yankees at varying times, but that’s probably not the limit – and the Cubs are not going to move him unless they see a substantial return. As a guy with control through 2023, there’s just no reason for the Cubs to be too aggressive here.
UPDATE: As a for-what-it’s-worth, The Athletic out of LA reports that the Dodgers have “engaged” the Cubs on Ian Happ at some point. Doesn’t mean the talks are ongoing. But apparently they have happened.
