Mentally Running Through the Non-Padres Contenders Who May Be in on Willson Contreras

Chicago Cubs

Honestly I just wanted to have a space to mentally run through my list of suitors who could want Willson Contreras *if* the Padres do wind up landing Juan Soto and Josh Bell.

  • Obviously there are the Mets, who very much want Contreras, but are aggressively working to hold down the price (and/or to get David Robertson included). They still seem like the most likely team outside of the Padres.
  • The Rays have been mentioned for a while, and are still being mentioned as of this morning (and they could also use Robertson):
  • Get a prospect and Tyler Glasnow. Just throwing it out there …
  • The Twins have not been directly tied to Contreras that I can recall, but definitely could look to add a bat (and coordinate the starts behind the plate with Gary Sanchez, who has been very disappointing).
  • The Guardians could absolutely use a bat, and the ability to use that bat behind the plate with some frequency would seem a big plus. Their catching situation is brutal on offense.
  • Cal Raleigh has been solid, but the Mariners are another one that could stand to add a bat to coordinate behind the plate, at DH, and maybe even some at 1B (this all depends a lot on the Ty France injury).
  • There would have been a fit with the Giants if they were going to be buying, but I don’t see any chance they pony up for a rental right now.

There could be a surprise in there among teams that want to get real crafty with how they’d use Contreras – the Yankees, for example? – but I tend to think the above-mentioned teams are the realistic options.
