The Cubs dropped the first half of the double-header despite a dominant first 6.0 innings from Marcus Stroman, which brings them down to a 4-game losing streak. That snuck up on me.
Tonight, they’ll hand the ball over to Sean Newcomb, who’s making his first start for the Cubs, after previously only relieving for Atlanta and Chicago this season. Newcomb did make a start for the Iowa Cubs a week ago, and it went well, but it was short: 4.0 IP, 3H, 1ER, 3BB, 8Ks.
Newcomb will go up against new Cardinals pitcher, Jose Quintana, whom they acquired ahead of the trade deadline. Quintana has faced the Cubs a bunch this season with the Pirates, mostly with success:

That’s just six total earned runs over 16 IP, with 13Ks and 6 walks. Not dominant, but not bad. Let’s see if the Cubs have finally figured him out.
