All day, it was like it was gonna be one of those games where the Cubs pitched well enough to win, but the bats could just do nothing against some admittedly strong Marlins pitching.
Indeed, the Marlins scored their sole run late on a groundball that found a hole. Boo. Stupid game, right?
AND THEN WILLSON CONTRERAS PLAYED HERO IN HIS ‘RETURN’ TO WRIGLEY FIELD:
That’s some poetic stuff right there. This whole week, after the deadline, has to have felt so good for Contreras. What comes next? Eh. Worry about that later.
As for the pitching, the first half of the game was all Justin Steele, who had himself a really rare outing:
It’s wild how sometimes Steele has these extreme strikeout games – usually short and fairly inefficient, but NASTY – and sometimes he has extreme pitch-to-contact games.
Bullpen picked up Steele from there, allowing just that one run on a groundball that squeaked through.
