Justin Steele is back on the mound for the Cubs today, after being bumped from his start on Wednesday night by the rain. If Steele throws 8.0 innings today, he’ll surpass his previous single-season high set all the way back in High-A in 2017. Steele’s coming off a short outing against the Giants that wasn’t really as bad as it seems. In fact, he’s been on a nice little run here, racking up 26 strikeouts over 26.1 IP with a 2.05 ERA in his last five starts.
Steele will be squaring up against the 24-year-old righty Edward Cabrera, who’s been a top-100 prospect up to and including this season. According to Statcast, Cabrera leads with his changeup (38.5%), followed by a 97 MPH four-seamer he throws nearly a quarter of the time. There’s also a healthy mix of breaking balls (curveballs and sliders), and he does have a sinker. I think he’s probably pretty darn good.
Go Cubs.
