Adrian Sampson is taking the ball for the Cubs this afternoon, following one of his worst performances of the year (albeit not a total disaster) against the Giants in San Francisco: 4.0 IP, 5H, 4ER, 1BB, 6Ks.
Obviously, enough damage was done, but I was still impressed to see the six strikeouts against just one walk — especially because he wasn’t really allowing a ton of hard contact. Just too much up in the air/on a line. Generally speaking, Sampson has been excellent this year and I expect that to continue this afternoon.
The Cubs will be going up against another former tip-top pitching prospect in Jesus Luzardo (top-10 prospect in baseball in 2019-2020), who was involved in a couple of big trades from the Nats to the A’s (Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson trade) and from the A’s to Miami (Starling Marte trade).
Luzardo, 24, hasn’t quite put it altogether yet in the big leagues, but he’s got the pedigree, he’s still very young, and he throws hard. He also strikes out a TON of batters, but his problem this season has just been too much hard contact and few too many free passes.
Let’s see if the Cubs can take advantage.
