The Chicago Cubs are opening up a three-game home series against the Nationals tonight at Wrigley Field. Here’s the lineup for Game 1 against the right-hander Anibal Sanchez.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
- Rafael Ortega, CF
- Willson Contreras, C
- Ian Happ, LF
- Seiya Suzuki, RF
- Patrick Wisdom, 1B
- Nico Hoerner, SS
- Nelson Velázquez, DH
- Nick Madrigal, 2B
- Chris Morel, 3B
SP: Keegan Thompson, RHP
Anibal Sanchez has struggled a lot this season, and has a particularly rough history against Yan Gomes (8-22, two 2Bs, two HRs, and a triple), but he’s not in the starting lineup tonight. Instead, it’s Willson Contreras behind the plate with Rafael Ortega in center field.
Nick Madrigal is also starting at second base again, which might normally squeeze Chris Morel out of the lineup, but he’s getting the start at third base, pushing Patrick Wisdom over to first.
I think, ideally, Morel will play a whole lot of third base next season (his most comfortable spot), which means Wisdom’s best shot at continuing playing time is at first base, with Frank Schwindel possibly being squeezed out in the process.
Either way, I’m happy to see Morel back in the lineup tonight after leaving the game early with hamstring tightness on Saturday and sitting out of yesterday’s finale against the Marlins.
As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ post closer to game time (7:05 CT).
