The Cubs won the opener last night against the Nationals, which means they have a chance to secure the series win tonight. Marcus Stroman is on the mound for Chicago, and Paolo Espino is pitching for Washington. Here’s David Ross’ lineup for Game 2 at Wrigley Field.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
- Rafael Ortega, CF
- Willson Contreras, C
- Ian Happ, LF
- Seiya Suzuki, RF
- Franmil Reyes, DH
- Nico Hoerner, SS
- Patrick Wisdom, 1B
- Zach McKinstry, 3B
- Chris Morel, 2B
SP: Marcus Stroman, RHP
Is this the Cubs best starting lineup of the year? It honestly might be, especially including a red-hot Marcus Stroman and the debut of the power-hitting DH Franmil Reyes, acquired off waivers yesterday.
Up the middle, the Cubs have Nico Hoerner and Chris Morel, which leaves third base open for Zack McKinstry (acquired at the deadline) and first base open for Patrick Wisdom, who’s been playing their a lot lately (but should get even more looks now that Frank Schwindel is down at Iowa). Maybe there’s some version of a better lineup with Nelson Velรกzquez, but this has got to be pretty close to the best the Cubs can do right now.
The top of the order is all pretty typical, with yet another start for Willson Contreras behind the plate. After months of protecting him with the DH spot, the Cubs certainly have used him as part of the battery a lot more lately.
As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ post closer to game time (7:05 CT).
