It’s finally here! The Field of Dreams game!
For as much as I made fun of MLB scheduling a Field of Dreams matchup between two complete non-contenders after the trade deadline, I’m still excited for the game. Last year’s installment was electric and exciting and every bit as nostalgic as you could’ve hoped. We’ll see if they can recapture that magic with two lesser teams.
Drew Smyly is on the mound for the Cubs this evening, coming off one of his best starts of the season against the Marlins: 6.2 IP, 5H, 0ER, 1BB, 4Ks. For the year, Cincinnati has a 97 wRC+ against left-handed pitching.
The Cubs have been even worse against left-handed pitching this season (92 wRC+, 24th), which is what they’ll face tonight in Nick Lodolo.
Lodolo, 24, debuted for the Reds this season with big strikeout numbers (58Ks in 43.0IP) but some trouble limiting the free passes (20 walks). He hasn’t allowed an egregious amount of hard contact, but he hasn’t exactly kept the ball on the ground either. He also has very significant lefty/righty splits, with right-handers crushing him to the tune of a .289/.379/.467 (.372 wOBA) slash line this season.
