After tying the game with a double in the 11th inning, Patrick Wisdom was thereafter headed home on a play at the plate as the would-be winning run. Unfortunately, he was tagged out (Cubs later walked if off anyway), and much more unfortunately, he was injured on the play.
You could see immediately that Wisdom knew something was very wrong with his left hand:
All the Cubs released after the game, via David Ross, was that Wisdom had injured his left ring finger and would be undergoing X-rays. Often in these situations, the player gets an X-ray immediately, and you see those “X-rays were negative” reports. We didn’t see that in this case. I’m not saying it means there is definitely a fracture or something there, but it does mean that we’re still in the dark much longer than usual in a situation like this.
It also makes it more likely, when combined with Wisdom’s reaction, that this is a serious injury. With Wisdom taking more and more reps over at first base, with the Cubs planning for their 2023 options, you’d hate to see him miss significant time.
I expect that we’ll find out more today before game time, including a roster move if the injury is serious. In the meantime, all you can hope for is a dislocation or something that was really painful, but not a long-lasting issue. The reaction was bad, though.
UPDATE: Hey, we DID get the X-rays negative update! It just took longer than usual (together with bad Wade Miley news):
