Let’s play two!
The Cubs dropped the series opener to St. Louis last night, with Jordan Montgomery tossing a Maddux at Wrigley Field (a complete game shutout under 100 pitches). And unfortunately, life isn’t getting any easier today.
Adam Wainwright is on the mound for the Cardinals, coming off two absolutely excellent starts against the Rockies and Brewers in St. Louis:
vsCOL: 7.0 IP, 3H, 0ER, 0BB, 7Ks
vsMIL: 9.0 IP, 3H, 1ER, 1BB, 8Ks
Yeesh. That’s 15 strikeouts, 1 walk, and six hits over his last 16 innings. Wainwright has a 3.11 ERA for the season over 24 starts and 150.1 IP. He’s also 75 years old.
Oh, and I guess I should point out that Wainwright has faced the Cubs twice this season, dominating them on both occasions:
@CHC: 7.0 IP, 9H, 2ER, 2BB, 0Ks
vsCHC: 7.0 IP, 6H, 0ER, 0BB, 4Ks
Meanwhile, the Cubs are debuting their 25-year-old right-handed pitching prospect Javier Assad this afternoon. Assad’s last two starts with Iowa were very good (combined): 12.0 IP, 9H, 1ER, 1BB, 11Ks.
Bryan wrote up everything you need to know about him right here:
