Matt Mervis CRUSHES One to Walk Off the Iowa Cubs!

Chicago Cubs

It’s been a scorching hot week for Chicago Cubs first base prospect Matt Mervis, who was getting plenty of love yesterday BEFORE he came to the plate in the 9th inning of Iowa’s game against St. Paul.

The game was tied at one after the I-Cubs plated their first run of the night just a couple innings earlier, and Mervis stepped up to lead off the bottom of the 9th. And then he went kabooooom:

What a shot. Mervis is going to challenge all comers for the Cubs’ minor league player of the year, and it’s going to be a really tough call among him, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Alexander Canario, as things stand right now.

I don’t know that Mervis’s presence at Triple-A will absolutely preclude the Cubs from making a move this offseason that impacts first base, but I do know that it’s pretty exciting to have a legit first base prospect in the waiting. If the Cubs don’t find that great deal out there in free agency, and instead decide to fill first base with a combination of guys like Patrick Wisdom, P.J. Higgins, and a lefty bench bat type (while adding aggressively elsewhere on the roster), I’m not going to hate that it means the path for Mervis is wiiiiide open. Dude is making me really want to see how it would translate in the bigs.
