Ah, unfortunately it seems Patrick Wisdom’s finger hasn’t gotten better enough for him to keep going, so he’s hitting the Injured List.
Alfonso Rivas is coming up to take his place on the roster:
Rivas returns to a big league slash line of .232/.313/.316/80 wRC+ over 201 PAs, despite considerably better numbers at Triple-A the last couple years. The big difference for him in the big leagues has been the 31.3% strikeout rate, driven primarily by him swinging way less than league average at strikes (his patience had served him well in the upper minors, but big league pitchers are, well, better at throwing strikes), and whiffing a TON when he swings outside the strike zone. He has struggled particularly badly against cutters and sliders.
No roster move involving Justin Steele today (lower-back tightness), so it’s possible a few days of rest will be enough and he avoided any kind of real issue (remember, his pitch count was high and his innings are climbing, so there was no reason not to pull him). It’s also possible the Cubs are just waiting and seeing, and will decide on an IL move if it gets closer to his start, when he’ll be replaced by a starter-for-a-day (as opposed to replacing him today with another reliever). Might just depend on how he feels by early next week.
