Tonight, for the first time as the away pitcher, Marcus Stroman returns to the mound in Toronto, where he spent the first 5.5 seasons of his career, amassing a stellar 3.76 ERA over 135 starts. Stroman has made 72 starts at the Rogers Center in his career, with a 3.42 ERA and an opposing slash line of just .244/.298/.366 (.290 wOBA).
Note, however, that the Blue Jays (115 wRC+) lead the AL and trail only the Dodgers and Mets in terms of overall offense against right-handed pitching this season. And Stroman is coming off a rough start against the Cardinals (5ER in 5IP) his last time out.
Meanwhile, the Cubs offense has a significant challenge of its own in Kevin Gausman, who’s peripherals are every bit as good as they were in his Cy Young candidate season with the Giants last year: 3.15 ERA (2.01 FIP), 27.7 K%, 3.9 BB%.
Go Cubs.
