Well that sure got out of hand.
Even if the Cubs had managed to finally come through against Jordan Montgomery, it probably would not have mattered in the end, with the Cardinals adding – significantly – to an early lead and all. But it was nevertheless disappointing to see so many opportunities turn into nothing. The Cubs wound up 0-9 with runners in scoring position.
Adrian Sampson came out of the gate with no control, and ground his way through a 30+ pitch first inning, fortunate to allow only two runs. From there, he struggled to open the 2nd, and it seemed like his night was going to be a very short and very ugly one.
… and then he retired 12 straight, somehow managing to get through 5.0 innings allowing just those two runs. It was kinda nuts. The guy just keeps doing enough to stay right there on the radar as a “hey, he really might be a good depth arm next year.”
Javier Assad got a chance to pitch in relief, and if not for a Nico Hoerner double-clutch, he’d have had a scoreless frame. Alas, Hoerner is very good, but not perfect.
Sean Newcomb is also not perfect, and he got hit hard again.
