Willson Contreras hasn’t played in a game since August 30, one full week ago, and he left that game early after being CLEARLY hurt from thing one. Why he’s not on the injured list is beyond me (UPDATE: Ope! Look at that, Contreras has just hit the IL. Unfortunately, because they waited, it’s retroactive only the maximum 3 days. More on that coming soon). Here’s the Cubs lineup for Game 1 of 3 against the Reds at Wrigley Field.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
- Nick Madrigal, 2B
- Seiya Suzuki, RF
- Ian Happ, LF
- Franmil Reyes, DH
- Nico Hoerner, SS
- Rafael Ortega, CF
- Yan Gomes, C
- Alfonso Rivas, 1B
- Christopher Morel, 3B
SP: Wade Miley, LHP
With Contreras out of the lineup again, David Ross continues to populate the top two spots in the order with the two guys who could use the most reps, after dealing with lengthy injuries all year, Nick Madrigal and Seiya Suzuki. As we discussed in the series preview earlier this morning, Suzuki has actually been hitting the ball really well (peripherals and results) for about a full month now, while Madrigal has cooled off significantly due to a total lack of power.
Hopefully, both guys finish out the season strong, because they should both play a significant role on the 2023 Cubs.
Also likely to play a big role next season? Ian Happ, who’s slashing .284/.324/.549 (141 wRC+) over his last 108 PAs. He should be set up for a big night against the Reds righty Justin Dunn, who has struggled against lefties for his career and especially this season.
Speaking of which, the lefties, Alfonso Rivas and Rafael Ortega, are both in the starting lineup tonight. And, as usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ post closer to game time (6:40 CT).
