Beat the Mets!
Beat the Mets!
Step right up and SWEEP THE METS!
The Cubs started the scoring early, pouring on six runs before the Mets could really take a breath. Thanks for starting David Peterson!
And it’s a good thing they did, because that’s where the Cubs’ scoring stopped. Drew Smyly was solid, though, the bullpen was capable, and the Cubs finished off the sweep.
Christopher Morel, filling in again for Nico Hoerner at shortstop, was showing off plenty of ability there. We know he’s had challenges with the throws from third base this year, but tonight was a reminder of how good he can be defensively. It’s a lot to ask of a rookie to be moving around all the time! He just needs reps.
Late in the game, Seiya Suzuki took a pitch off his hand from old friend Mychal Givens, and I was immediately flashing that the Cubs had just lost a player to a fracture for the second night in a row. Suzuki stayed in the game, though, so hopefully it winds up just being a little painful in the moment, but no real issue.
In the bottom of the 9th, as soon as Suzuki took the field, he wound up getting bonked in a collision with center fielder Michael Hermosillo as he made an incredible catch.
That was part of Mark Leiter Jr. getting the save in the 9th, and the Cubs completed the sweep, in New York, of the theoretically very good Mets. Giggity. Cubs win the NL East now. Them’s the rules.
