Lotta Wins, Young’s Big Moment, McKinstry is Good Now, Thompson’s Rehab Outing, Pujols Feasts on Meatballs, and Other Cubs Bullets

Going all the way back to mid-July, the Chicago Cubs are 28-25. It sucks that they aren’t in a playoff race, but I mean, this is good stuff. There are positive signs here! The Cubs could wind up finishing the second half with a winning record.

  • Jared Young, making his big league debut at age 27, got his first career hit yesterday, and absolutely savored the moment. I love this:
  • Young’s teammates back in the Iowa Cubs locker room erupted in cheers when he got that hit, according to Alex Cohen.
  • Zach McKinstry, who tripled and homered yesterday to supply the offense for the Cubs, may be finding his footing. Consider that he was 0-for-his first five games with the Cubs. Since then? He’s hit .253/.301/.460/110 wRC+. For a utility guy who can play all the corners and second base, that wouldn’t just be OK, that’d be awesome. It’s only 94 PAs, though, and he has yet to show the ability to hit at this level in the big leagues over any kind of sustained period, so I’ll be really cautious before fully buying in. That said, if he stays even league average the rest of the year, keeping him on the 40-man this offseason will be a no-brainer. It might already be.
  • Keegan Thompson threw 45 pitches in a successful rehab outing tonight for the Iowa Cubs:
  • I would tentatively not expect TOO many more rehab outings for Thompson if he’s already at 45 pitches, since I don’t think the Cubs are planning to stretch him back out to 80+ before the end of the season.
  • I think we’re supposed to see Adbert Alzolay back as soon as today. And Hayden Wesneski is starting today! Fun things!
  • Wow. MLB teams are essentially jockeying to have commercial rights in international areas, and I think this is going to become a much bigger story soon:
  • Not at all hard to imagine the Cubs wanting – for example – Japan to be one of their markets, which would incentivize them to add EVEN MORE Japanese stars …
  • Marcus Stroman is talking up the younger players on his team, getting a chance to show what they are capable of, and I’ve gotta believe he’s looking forward to next year:
  • Cardinals fans got very mad at me for this tweet:
  • I was *not* implying some kind of conspiracy. I *was* implying that Pujols has been fortunate to get a load of meatballs lately on which to feast (or at least that it has FELT that way to me when I see the highlights). Go get 700. It’s a great story. Whatever. I was just pointing out what a hilariously awful pitch this was. Maybe as perfectly bad as it can get.
  • Such a great partnership:
  • I was not aware that this was happening, and it is quite jarring:
  • Overall with the Padres so far, Soto’s ISO is just .121, which is quite a bit below league average (.150). He still takes so many walks and strikes out so little that his overall slash line is above average (.210/.376/.331/114 wRC+), but good lord that is not that hitter you’re acquiring him to be. Looking at his batted ball metrics, though, it has to be a whole lot of bad luck in there, because he still seems to be making really good contact overall.
  • … the Padres should probably dump him after the season for nothing and the Cubs would take him, I guess.
  • This Mets fan did not like me enjoying the failings of the Mets this week against the Cubs:
