With just 16 games left on the calendar, the Cubs are in Miami to take on the Marlins. Wade Miley will be on the mound for Chicago in what will be just his seventh start of the season. That said, he continues to be effective, going 5.0 innings of one-run baseball against the Giants his last time out.
Miley has lasted at least 6.0 innings just two of his 7 starts this year, but he’s given up just 9 earned runs in 28.0 IP (2.89 ERA), so, again, he’s been good when he’s out there. Too bad injuries gobbled up his entire year.
Miley will be opposed by the 24-year-old-righty, Edward Cabrera, who’s gotten excellent results this season (2.70 ERA over 11 starts), even if the peripherals don’t quite match (4.09 xERA). Among his issues, too many walks: 12.3%.
With that said, his contact management has been pretty excellent. The 11.7 degree launch angle is a little high, but his 47.2% groundball rate is great. So is his 86.4 MPH average exit velocity (that’s A-List territory if he could do it for a full season) and his 32.6% hard-hit rate. Also of note? Righties (.351 wOBA) have hit him way better than lefties (.201 wOBA), both this season and last. And he’s struck out 25.8% of the batters he’s faced. He’s no pushover. Let’s see if the Cubs can make it work without so many of their regulars.
