The Chicago Cubs once again have two minor league affiliates involved in postseason play tonight. The South Bend Cubs are playing in the Midwest League Championship Series against Lake County (Cleveland Guardians), having dropped game one, and game two is tonight at 6pm CT. If they win, the finale of the series is tomorrow. If they lose, the season is over. The Cubs starting pitcher is officially still TBA.
Meanwhile, the Tennessee Smokies kick off their divisional series matchup tonight at 6:15pm CT against the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Los Angeles Angels). The Smokies starter is still currently listed as TBA.
I like this fun fact on Matt Mervis’s 34th homer, and who he was facing when he hit it:
Mervis is currently two behind the minor league leaders in homers – Moises Gomez (Cardinals) has 36, and Hunter Goodman (Rockies) also has 36.
Cubs 15th rounder Haydn McGeary was one of the few position players drafted by the Cubs, and he immediately hit well in his pro debut (.292/.346/.458/122 wRC+ before the two postseason games, where he added another homer). That was largely expected given his video game performance in college – those types GENERALLY rake prior to Double-A – but it was still a nice checkpoint to see.
Good read on McGeary’s path to the Cubs here:
