They went down a game in the series initially, but the South Bend Cubs powered up from there, winning last night and then again tonight to take home the Midwest League title!
Owen Caissie, Pablo Aliendo, and Luis Verdugo homered in the game, Porter Hodge had a solid start, Joe Nahas was excellent out of the bullpen, and Sheldon Reed closed it out in the 9th. Cubs win 7-4, and take the series 2-1.
2022 MIDWEST LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!!!
This group features a number of the Cubs’ top prospects, many of whom came up from Myrtle Beach at some point this season, where the Cubs had one of the most dominant teams in all of the minor leagues. They brought that energy and production with them, and the South Bend Cubs became something of a monster team in their own right. And now they’ll have a trophy and some rings to commemorate it.
Watch this and absorb just how much these High-A South Bend Cubs wanted to win the championship in their league. I really like this.
These guys have now had a taste of winning their league, and that hunger is going to continue on into the future. They’ll want it again next year. And the next year. And they’ll also have experience playing in playoff games, where – no, it’s not MLB, but – the pressure is higher. Experience matters. Doing it together matters. I’m just really happy for and about these players. More tomorrow, I’m sure.
