After a wonderful two months in 2021 (back-to-back NL Rookie of the Month honors!), Frank Schwindel could not replicate his success with the Chicago Cubs this year. A lot of it was natural regression, but a lot of it was also health stuff that he can hopefully recover from well enough to keep playing a number of years at some professional level.
The Cubs released Schwindel earlier this month so that he could pursue whatever that next option might be, and sure enough, he’s found it:
Frank is an Eagle!
The Águilas Cibaeñas of the Dominican Winter League have signed Frank Schwindel to a deal for the 2022-23 season. Based on the replies and quote tweets (and Google Translate), I think the fans are happy to see him coming? They should be. Everyone winds up loving Frank the Tank. (Or El Tanque?)
Schwindel can compete at a high level and make some money this offseason, and it also figures to be the perfect opportunity to play for his next minor league deal or perhaps a lucrative opportunity in Asia. Hopefully he’s healthy and he rakes in the Dominican Republic. Schwindel has played there before with some success.
Overall, the guy was just so joyful and kind, and even if it’s not with the Cubs, I want to see Frank Schwindel have as much success as possible.
