It’s a battle of the lefties!
This afternoon, Nick Lodolo is starting for the Reds coming off a relative torrid stretch of baseball: 6 starts, 38.1 IP, 49Ks(!), 6BBs(!), 2.82 ERA(!), 54.2 GB%(!).
That’s quality starts in five of his last six outings, with the sixth coming just one inning shy of the mark. Really impressive stuff. HOWEVA, the Cubs were able to get to him earlier this season, when he lasted just 4.2 IP in Cincinnati allowing 4 earned runs on seven hits and four walks against six strikeouts. That was one of his worst starts of the year.
Meanwhile, Drew Smyly was pretty good his last time out, against the Mets in New York, no less: 5.0 IP, 4H, 1ER, 1BB, 5Ks. And that came after 7.0 shutout innings against the Giants.
Notably, the Cubs (97 wRC+) and Reds (97 wRC+) offenses have identical production against left-handed pitching this season.
