Here’s what I wrote earlier today when talking about the Chicago Cubs prospects in the Arizona Fall League, and thinking about their statistical results, emphasis added: “Take all that for what it’s worth: just an update on the performances, not an evaluation of anything. Even at the end of the AFL season, it’s going to be a little hard to make much hay from the stat lines. You’d love to hear some scouting reports, and there are definitely some players for whom a huge performance would be more notable than others (for example, I’d really love to see Brennen Davis have a big AFL in the results department).”
Funny timing.
Brennen Davis got his first AFL action in today, and in his second at bat, he cranked a homer to left:
Another view:
Appreciate the “Mash” mention, but of course, Mash is Davis’s teammate, Matt Mervis (who doubled in the game). Understandable that you’d pull it out for Davis after that easy looking power.
Davis, of course, is making up for lost time after missing most of the 2022 season at Iowa with a back issue that necessitated surgery. Davis hit passably after returning from the surgery (.188/.361/.344/99 wRC+), but the average was dragged down by a tiny BABIP and the sample was just 83 plate appearances. This time in the AFL is really important for him, and all else equal, you would like to see some quality results.
So far, so good.
