Welp. The Cubs locked up that whole “won’t lose 90 games” thing and then lost two in a row.
Tonight it was a walk-off by the Reds, after they’d tied the game in the 7th:
Javier Assad looked really good again tonight, pounding the zone early, staying ahead of hitters, and either getting strikeouts or crummy contact. We can’t sleep on the lineup caveat – it’s a really, really bad Reds lineup right now – but Assad did all he could to wrap up his season well. Look forward to digging in more on him in the weeks and months ahead.
Given how nails he’s been in relief, it figured that EVENTUALLY Keegan Thompson would hang one and get blasted for it. That’s what happened tonight for a two-run homer in the 7th to tie the game. He’s still going to get plenty of love, including tonight, because he dominated outside of that dinger.
Offensively, the Cubs got just the solo homers from Willson Contreras and Nico Hoerner, and yeah, this offense is really going to need some work this offseason.
