Mother Nature set us up with a double dose of action today, first with a win-or-go-home Game 5 and then Game 1 of the NLCS in San Diego. An odd shift in dynamics, but I’ll take it.
Cleveland Guardians at New York Yankees – ALDS Game 5
After Game 5 was washed out last night the Guardians and Yankees will play their decisive fifth game this afternoon in The Bronx. The extra day gave Aaron Boone the option of going with Nestor Cortes over Jameson Taillon. Terry Francona is sticking with Aaron Civale today, setting up a potential ALCS Game 1 featuring Shane Bieber on the bump for the Guardians.
But first, they’ll have to take care of business today, something that Austin Hedges says his team is ready to do.
“It feels like it was meant to be.”

Philadelphia Phillies at San Diego Padres – NLCS Game 1
The NLCS is set and features a pair of Wild Card teams that again show why going for it is often a good idea. The Padres and Phillies won the Machado and Harper sweepstakes ahead of the 2019 season, and just a few years later, they meet in the NLCS for a shot at playing in the World Series.
Zach Wheeler (who signed a five-year, $118 million deal ahead of the 2020 season) will take the ball for the Phils in Game 1 and be opposed by Yu Darvish, whom the Padres acquired from the Cubs ahead of the 2021 season, the same offseason in which they traded for former Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell.
