Anthony Rizzo Reportedly Re-Signing with the Yankees on a Multi-Year Deal (UPDATE)

Chicago Cubs

We’ll always wonder about those Houston Astros rumors that popped up last night – sure felt like leverage at the time – but whatever their effect, Anthony Rizzo is returning to the New York Yankees.

Although he rejected the Qualifying Offer today, that was clearly in anticipation of a multi-year deal:

That always made the most sense, given how well Rizzo performed this year for the Yankees, how well he fit in, and how much he seems to like his New York connection. Good for him. I’d rather he stay there than sign with the Astros.

As for the first base market, I would say there’s not a huge impact here, since Rizzo back to the Yankees was always expected. If he HAD gone to the Astros, that would’ve taken them out of the Jose Abreu market, but who knows if maybe at that point the Yankees would’ve gotten involved. So I say: very little impact here.

Now the Yankees will go about trying to re-sign THAT OTHER free agent of theirs …

UPDATE: Rizzo’s deal is actually a little bit better for him than initially reported:
